Week 7- Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences (free choice)

Well after watching the short video on Howard Gardner's Multiple Intelligences, I decided to do my free choice on my thoughts. First, thank goodness that he cleared up some of his thoughts and ideas about the Multiple Intelligences. I'm not sure about the rest of you, but during my undergraduate the Multiple Intelligences were extremely popular and tons of my classes focused on how I would design a lesson plan that touched on the them. Let me tell you, I pulled some serious ideas out of "you know where" when I was reaching for a kinethsetic goal for a reading lesson or how to reach the linguistically inclined while playing dodge ball. One of the best things I thought he said was that not every lesson needs to include all eight intelligences, but we need to think about touching upon a few in each lesson. I wish my professors had watched this video before designing some of their assignments!

Another point that I really liked was how he said that we cover so many topics in year that we just skim the surface, without really going in depth into the subject. I know this sounds a lot like tracking, but really why not focus on the topics that students really invest themselves in. Isn't that one of the key components to getting students involved in their own learning...having them invested?

Finally, on a side note, did anyone else happen to catch the hurricane going on outside that interview? At one point it looked like the tree was going to fall down! Just a side note :)

  1. I think it is important for students to learn Howard Gardner's theories. I think it is important because if students can figure out how they absorb and process information, then they can advocate and take extra measures to get the information in different formats. I know that I am an auditory/visual learner. I also benefit from kinesthetic activities. So, taking large amounts of text and reading for hours doesn't work for me. But, add a video and activity I can master something. I think that is why I love the computer. I can search for what I need to help things make sense. As a teacher, I can provide enough materials and supplies to meet the needs of all students.
