This pen has many different applications, in my opinion. This pen has an infrared scanner, microphone, speakers, headphone jack, and writes. So what happens is you write your notes while the pen is recording the audio. Then when you go back to your dorm room, home, or apartment you can download your notes, which the infrared has copied, into your computer. Or if you missed writing down something you can double click on what you wrote just before you missed the words and the pen will replay the audio that was recorded when you were writing.
The way it works is that you write on special "dot" paper that has microdots on it. The pen is able to use that paper to orient the audio and text. It looks like normal lined paper. At first I thought that having to buy the pen as well as special paper was kind of a rip off, however, they just put out that you can print your own paper.
This pen has some pretty big implications in the school world. College and high school students would be able to record lectures as well as share notes online. While students who have learning disabilities would be able to review lectures and concepts after the class has ended. Pretty impressive in my opinion.

Wow. I can't even believe something like that exists! What a wonderful tool. Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks for posting this. I've heard of "magic" pens, but have never used one. Seems pretty useful as well as cool. :)
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading this I was asking myself, well how can this be useful? If you are writing it down anyways, it can be scanned in a PDF. I wasn't going to comment, however last night I was attending a meeting in which we have a secretary who takes minutes. As I was watching her take the notes, I remembered reading your post and thought, WAIT! If she had this pen she would not need to retype everything and certainly would not miss anything that was said. I'm curious now to find out more about this pen? Anyone know the cost?
ReplyDeleteThe costs vary depending on where you buy it from, but I've seen a bundle package on Amazon (pen, two ink cartridges, and a two pack of paper) for around 175. I think one of the most useful things about it is that you can click on a word you typed, and hear the audio at that point. For example, say you remember someone giving an example during the lecture, but you were so busy writing the definition that you didn't hear it all. You could click on the definition and hear the example again.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is cool! Thanks for sharing, I am emailing my tech guys about this.
ReplyDeleteWow! At the technology conference last week, the writing teacher showed us this in the seminar. The only problem, was she ran out of time to show the exact way it works. She did mention that it saves as a quicktime file, so it can be shared that way. I think it is amazing. She uses it in her classroom and has one of her better students take the notes, then she goes ahead and posts them to her school wiki page for all to share. Now all students have the notes and can fill in their own notes where they may have missed something. Neat! Great idea for college students in huge lecture halls. I was thinking of the digital recorder, and they are about 100.00, so this is right up that alley!
